The desert is easy to love and easy to get wrong
A desert event can be the highlight of your company’s year: the dunes, the sunset, the whole team around one BBQ. It can also be a long bus ride, a crowded camp and a cold dinner. The difference is in the planning. Use this checklist.
1. Start with the goal
Bonding a new team, rewarding a great year and hosting clients are three different events. The goal decides the tone: competitive, relaxed or premium.
2. Pick the right date and time
From October to April, the afternoon into sunset is ideal. From May to September, choose early morning or night programmes. Avoid big public holidays if you want quiet dunes.
3. Count your people — and who will drive
Drivers must be at least 16 and no licence is needed. Ask in advance who wants to drive a buggy or a quad, and who prefers the 4×4 safari as a passenger.
4. Choose two or three activities
One strong activity, one team challenge, one calm moment. For example: buggy convoy, paintball, then sunset and sandboarding.
5. Plan the food
BBQ in the dunes, dinner at the camp, or a private Bedouin tent with seating and BBQ. Collect dietary needs early; halal food and a Muslim-friendly option are available.
6. Sort out transport
Decide if the team comes by car or by group transport from the office or hotel. Group transport can be added to your quote.
7. Keep the memories
A photo package and action cameras on the buggies give you content for your internal newsletter and social media.
8. Agree on the budget
Ask for one all-inclusive quote. A group pays much less per person than two or three people booking alone, and nothing should be added at the camp.
