Dune Bashing in Dubai: What It Is, Is It Safe & How to Book

Dune bashing is the rollercoaster of the Dubai desert. Learn what it is, how it feels, who should skip it and how to try it with Wild Adventures.

The moment the dunes start moving

The tyres lose a little air, the driver tightens his seatbelt and smiles. Then the 4×4 climbs a wall of red sand, hangs at the top for half a second, and slides down the other side sideways. That is dune bashing — and for most visitors, it is the moment they remember first.

What is dune bashing?

Dune bashing is off-road driving over sand dunes in a powerful 4×4, with an experienced driver at the wheel. The car climbs, turns along the crest and descends steep slopes. It feels like a rollercoaster with no rails, but the driver controls every move.

In Dubai, it is the centrepiece of most desert safari tours, usually on the way to the camp.

Is dune bashing safe?

With a trained driver, a well-maintained vehicle and seatbelts on, dune bashing is a controlled activity. A few simple rules make it comfortable:

  • Keep your seatbelt fastened for the whole ride.
  • Eat lightly before the trip.
  • Tell the driver if you want it gentler — good drivers adapt.

It is not recommended for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or very young children. If that is you, read our guide to a desert safari without dune bashing.

Morning or evening dune bashing?

The evening desert safari is the classic choice: dune bashing in golden light, then sunset in the dunes. The morning safari has cooler sand, fewer cars and private-car options.

Want to drive the dunes yourself?

Dune bashing is the passenger version. If you would rather hold the wheel, a self-drive dune buggy in Dubai gives you the same dunes with you in control, from AED 475 for a Can-Am. Drivers must be at least 16.

Where to try it

Wild Adventures runs its desert trips from its base at Al Badayer, one of the best dune areas near Dubai. See all options — safari, buggy, quad and dirt bike — on our Dubai desert tours page.
