What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari (Summer and Winter Guide)

Light layers, closed shoes and a scarf for the sand. Here is exactly what to wear on a Dubai desert safari, morning, evening or overnight.

The sand decides your outfit

The first thing you notice when the 4×4 stops in the dunes is the light. The second is the sand: fine, warm, and everywhere within ten minutes. What you wear decides whether you spend the trip enjoying the view or shaking sand out of your clothes.

The good news: dressing for the desert is simple once you know three things — the time of day, the season, and whether you will drive a vehicle yourself.

The basics for every safari

  • Loose, breathable clothing. Cotton or linen keeps you cool in the day and comfortable in the car.
  • Closed shoes or sturdy sneakers. Sandals fill with hot sand; flip-flops get lost on the dunes.
  • Sunglasses and a scarf or buff. They protect your eyes and face from wind-blown sand, especially during dune bashing.
  • Sunscreen and a cap for any daytime trip.
  • Modest outfits. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful in the desert camps and photograph better in the dunes.

Morning, evening or overnight: what changes

A morning desert safari runs under strong sun, so sun protection matters most: long light sleeves, hat, sunscreen.

On an evening desert safari, it is warm on arrival and cool after sunset. Bring a light jacket or hoodie for the evening in the camp.

For an overnight desert safari, pack a warm layer for the night and a change of clothes for the morning. Desert nights in winter can feel cold.

Summer vs winter

  • Summer (June to September): the lightest fabrics, light colours, plenty of water, and as little skin exposed to direct sun as possible.
  • Winter (November to March): pleasant days but cool evenings. Layers are the answer — a t-shirt, a long-sleeve top and a jacket you can take off.

If you plan to drive a buggy, quad or dirt bike

Riding changes the rules. Wear long trousers, closed shoes that hold your ankles, and keep loose scarves tucked in. Helmets and goggles are essential: you can find helmets, goggles and riding gear in the Wild Adventures shop.

What not to bring

Leave jewellery, expensive watches and anything you do not want covered in sand at the hotel. Keep your phone in a zipped pocket or a small bag.
